A Lyga

A Lyga is the top division of Lithuanian football, re-established in the early 1990s after the country regained independence and organised its own national championship for the first time since the Soviet era. Like other Baltic leagues, it plays on a calendar-year schedule rather than the autumn-to-spring pattern common elsewhere in Europe, a response to the harsh Baltic winters. Žalgiris Vilnius has been the dominant club of the modern era, collecting the majority of titles since the league's relaunch and regularly finishing well clear of its rivals. The club also became the first from Lithuania to reach the group stage of a UEFA club competition, a breakthrough that marked a rare moment of Baltic football gaining sustained continental visibility.
