Asian Games

Football at the Asian Games is the men's national team tournament held as part of Asia's largest multi-sport event, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The sport has been part of the programme since the very first Asian Games in 1951, making it one of the event's original disciplines. Since 2002, the competition has followed an Olympic-style age restriction, limiting squads to under-23 players with an allowance for three older players, which turns the tournament into a showcase for the next generation rather than a clash of full senior sides. The competition carries unusually high stakes for South Korea, whose male athletes are granted an exemption from mandatory military service if they win the gold medal, adding a layer of pressure rarely found in age-restricted football.
