Cup

The Bulgarian Cup is the country's national knockout competition, with roots going back to the 1920s, though its modern format was established in the early 1980s under the current Bulgarian Cup name. Clubs from every division enter, giving lower-league and amateur sides the chance to face First League opposition, with most rounds played as single, one-off matches rather than home-and-away ties, aside from the semi-finals. That straight knockout format tends to produce upsets earlier in the competition than fans see in the league itself, and the final is one of the season's showcase occasions, watched closely even by supporters whose own clubs were eliminated months earlier. The winner typically earns a route into European qualification alongside the league's leading finishers.
