Championship

The Championship is the second tier of Scottish football, introduced in its current form as part of a restructuring of the league system in 2013. It is contested by 10 clubs over a 36-game season, with each team facing the others four times. The champions are promoted automatically to the Premiership, while the second-, third- and fourth-placed teams enter a play-off, with the winner then facing the Premiership's eleventh-placed club for a second promotion spot. At the bottom of the table, the lowest side is relegated to League One. The Championship regularly features clubs with recent top-flight pedigree and passionate local support, and its promotion play-off format makes the closing weeks of the season especially tense.
