EFL Trophy

The EFL Trophy is a knockout competition unique to English football, bringing together the 48 clubs of League One and League Two with invited Under-21 academy sides from Premier League and Championship clubs, a format introduced in 2016. The competition begins with regional group stages before moving into a straight knockout bracket. Mixing academy teams with senior professional sides is a rare crossover in European football, designed to give young players competitive first-team experience while testing lower-league clubs against different opposition. The trophy has carried several sponsor names over the years. Its final is staged at Wembley Stadium in London, drawing large crowds for a lower-tier fixture and giving smaller clubs a rare chance to lift a trophy on English football's biggest stage.
