Community Shield

The Community Shield is an annual English match between the reigning Premier League champion and the FA Cup holder, played at Wembley at the start of the season. Founded in 1908 as the FA Charity Shield and renamed in 2002, it functions as a domestic Super Cup outside the regular league and cup ladder; if a club wins both the league and cup, the league runner-up plays instead. Manchester United hold the record with more Community Shield wins than any other club, well clear of Arsenal and Liverpool. Historically, drawn matches were shared between the two clubs for six months each, before penalty shootouts were introduced to settle ties, and gate proceeds are traditionally directed to charitable causes.
