Cup

The Greek Cup has been played since 1931, making it one of the country's oldest football competitions alongside the league itself. Since 1971 the tournament has been reserved for professional clubs, with amateur sides competing separately, and the knockout format has traditionally paired two-legged quarter-finals and semi-finals with a single decisive final. Olympiacos are the competition's dominant force, having reached the final many more times than any rival and built by far the largest haul of Cup wins in Greek football history. Finals and semi-finals involving Olympiacos against Athens rivals PAOK or AEK have repeatedly become flashpoints, with crowd trouble and refereeing controversies almost as memorable as the football itself, reflecting the intensity that Greek Cup football carries beyond the pitch.
