HNL

The HNL has been Croatia's top football division since 1992, launched immediately after the country's independence and its clubs' departure from the old Yugoslav league system. Ten clubs contest the league each season, meeting four times apiece for a marathon 36-round schedule, with European qualification for the leaders and relegation for the weakest side at the bottom. Dinamo Zagreb have been overwhelmingly the dominant club of the independence era, winning the large majority of championships on offer, while their fiercest rival, Hajduk Split, gives the league its defining fixture: the “Eternal Derby,” a rivalry rooted in the 1920s that ranks among Europe's most passionate. Croatian football's academies, especially Dinamo's, are also renowned for producing top-level talent, most famously Luka Modrić.
