Úrvalsdeild

Úrvalsdeild is Iceland's top football division, with a national championship dating back to 1912, making it one of the older competitions in European football despite the country's tiny population. Because of Iceland's harsh winters, the season is squeezed into the summer months, typically running from April to October, with the league split among a small pool of clubs that mostly draw players from the Reykjavik capital area and its surrounding towns. KR Reykjavik is the most decorated club in the competition's history, having built its collection of titles across more than a century of play. The league's promotion and relegation ties it to a broader pyramid, but its enduring character is shaped by amateur-era roots and part-time football only recently giving way to a more professional setup.
