Leagues Cup

The Leagues Cup is an official cross-border competition between clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX, first played on a small scale in 2019 and relaunched in 2023 as a tournament involving every club from both leagues. Its format has distinctive rules: every group-stage match must produce a winner, with drawn games going straight to a penalty shootout for a bonus point, and top finishers earn places in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. From 2025 the field was streamlined to 36 clubs. Inter Miami won the 2023 edition — the first trophy in the club's history, arriving just weeks after Lionel Messi's debut — and no club managed to win the competition twice across its opening editions, underlining its unpredictability.
