Magyar Kupa

The Magyar Kupa is Hungary's national football cup, established in 1909, eight years after the league itself got underway. The competition was historically dominated by the same two Budapest clubs that ruled the early league table, MTK and Ferencváros, whose early rivalry helped define Hungarian domestic football before the sport spread more evenly across the country. Today the tournament remains open well beyond the professional ranks, with amateur and lower-division clubs working their way in through regional qualifying rounds before joining the NB I sides in the later stages. As in the rest of European football, cup upsets against much bigger opposition are part of the competition's appeal, and the winner typically earns qualification for European competition alongside the league's top finishers.
