KNVB Beker

The KNVB Beker is the Netherlands' national football cup, launched in 1898 and open to clubs across the professional and amateur game — around 100 teams enter each season, from Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie sides down to leading amateur clubs who qualify through regional district cups. Nearly all rounds are single matches decided by extra time and penalties, with the final traditionally held at De Kuip in Rotterdam since 1989. Ajax are the record champions by a wide margin over Feyenoord and PSV. As an open cup reaching down to amateur football, it carries a genuine FA Cup-style giant-killing tradition, and its winner goes on to face the Eredivisie champion in the season-opening Johan Cruijff Schaal.
