Super Cup

The Johan Cruijff Schaal is the Netherlands' Super Cup, with a genuinely discontinuous history: a one-off match in 1949, over four decades of dormancy, a revival in 1991, and its current name adopted in 1996 in honour of Johan Cruyff. It is played as a single match between the Eredivisie champion and the KNVB Cup winner, with the league runner-up substituting if one club completes the double, and has been hosted at the champion's own stadium since 2017. PSV Eindhoven lead the all-time list, narrowly ahead of Ajax, in a fixture that functions purely as a prestige season-opener with no European qualification attached.
