NM Cupen

NM Cupen is Norway's national football cup, contested since 1902 and the country's oldest football competition. It began as an invitational tournament for county champions before opening to a wider range of clubs in 1917 and finally becoming a fully nationwide competition in 1963, once clubs from the far north could take part on equal terms. The format is a straight knockout, drawing in teams from every level of the pyramid, including small amateur sides that occasionally topple Eliteserien opponents in famous cup upsets. That giant-killing tradition is central to the competition's appeal, giving lower-division clubs a rare shot at silverware and a marquee tie against the country's biggest names, with the final traditionally held at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo.
