US Open Cup

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing soccer competition in the United States, dating back to the 1913-14 season. Its defining feature is openness: clubs from Major League Soccer down through lower professional divisions and registered amateur sides are all eligible to enter, creating a genuine knockout ladder where semi-professional part-timers occasionally face, and on rare occasions beat, full-time MLS professionals. The tournament is organized by the U.S. Soccer Federation and named after Lamar Hunt, a pioneering figure in American soccer. Its long history and open-door format give it a unique place in the American game, offering smaller clubs a realistic, if difficult, path to silverware against the country's biggest names.
