Virsliga

Virsliga is the top division of Latvian football, relaunched in the early 1990s as the country restored its independence and reorganised football away from the Soviet system. Following the pattern common among Baltic leagues, the season runs on a calendar-year basis rather than the autumn-to-spring format used elsewhere in Europe. The league's defining chapter belongs to Skonto Riga, which won the championship in fourteen consecutive seasons from 1991 to 2004, an extraordinary run that stood as a European record for the sport at the time it was set. That streak still shapes how the league's history is discussed today, even as a wider, more competitive group of clubs has emerged in the years since Skonto's dominance ended.
