World Cup - Qualification Intercontinental Play-offs

The World Cup Qualification Intercontinental Play-offs form the final, narrowest bottleneck on the road to the FIFA World Cup, bringing together teams that finished just short of automatic qualification in their own confederations. Rather than one continent's federation running the event, it is organised directly by FIFA and features national teams from different confederations meeting for the first time in the qualifying cycle. For the 2026 World Cup, the format was expanded into a six-team mini-tournament, split into two brackets, with matches staged in the host region shortly before the finals themselves. Because so few places are on offer and the teams involved are often unfamiliar with each other, these play-offs are widely regarded as some of the highest-pressure matches in international football, decided over single knockout fixtures rather than home-and-away ties.
