Cup

The ÖFB-Cup is Austria's national football cup, contested since the 1918-19 season with breaks only for the Second World War years and a quiet period in the 1950s when interest briefly waned. It is a straight knockout competition open to clubs throughout the Austrian football pyramid, meaning top-flight Bundesliga sides can be drawn against regional amateur clubs in the early rounds, occasionally producing memorable upsets on modest local pitches. Austria Wien stand out as the record winners of the trophy, having built their tally over a history stretching back almost to the competition's earliest years. As in most European cup competitions, the winner is rewarded with a route into European qualification, giving the tournament genuine sporting stakes even for clubs with little realistic chance of the league title.
