Serie B

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série B is the second tier of Brazilian football, sitting directly below Série A in the national pyramid. Twenty clubs play each other home and away across the season in a double round-robin format, with the top four earning promotion to the following year's Série A and the bottom four dropping into Série C. Because relegation from the top flight can strike even giant clubs, Série B regularly features some of Brazil's biggest and most decorated names rebuilding for an immediate return, drawing crowds and television audiences that can rival the first division. The competition has become known as a proving ground where storied traditional sides mix with ambitious provincial clubs chasing their first taste of the top flight.
