CAF Super Cup

The CAF Super Cup is African club football's traditional season-opener, an annual single match between the previous season's champions of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. It follows the model used by super cups elsewhere in the world, pitting a continent's two most successful clubs from the season just finished against each other before the new campaign begins in earnest. Unlike the group-and-knockout format of its parent competitions, the Super Cup is decided in one fixture, historically hosted at the home ground of the Champions League winner. For the clubs involved, the trophy is a relatively modest addition to the season compared with continental glory, but it carries symbolic weight as an early measure of form and a rare direct meeting between the continent's two strongest cup competitions.
