Copa del Rey

The Copa del Rey is Spain's oldest national football competition, first contested in 1902-03 — predating La Liga itself by more than two decades. Around 125 clubs from the top five tiers of Spanish football enter a single-elimination knockout, with lower-division clubs hosting early rounds at their own grounds before two-legged semi-finals and a single final at a fixed neutral venue. Barcelona hold a clear record lead in Copa del Rey titles, with Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid the next-most successful clubs. The format is deliberately built for giant-killing, and fourth-tier Cultural Leonesa's win over Atlético Madrid in 2019-20 remains one of the competition's most memorable upsets.
