1. Division

Cyprus's First Division is the top tier of Cypriot football, with an organised national championship dating back to the 1930s under the Cyprus Football Association. Clubs play a double round-robin during the regular season, with the top sides typically advancing into a championship group that decides the title. APOEL and Omonia Nicosia are the island's two most successful and widely supported clubs, and matches between them, the Nicosia derby, rank among the fiercest fixtures in Cypriot sport. The division's standout European moment came in 2011-12, when APOEL became the first Cypriot club to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, an unlikely run that remains a landmark in the country's football history and briefly put Cypriot football on the continental map.
