Germany's Super Cup, historically the DFB-Supercup and now branded for its honoree as the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, was first played in 1987, discontinued after 1996 in favour of a short-lived league cup, and reinstated in its familiar form from 2010. Unusually among European Super Cups, it is played as a single match without extra time — going straight to penalties if level — and hosted at the home ground of the DFB-Pokal winner rather than a neutral venue. It pits the Bundesliga champion against the DFB-Pokal holder, with the league runner-up stepping in if one club completes the double. Bayern Munich are the clear record champions, comfortably ahead of Borussia Dortmund, in a fixture that serves as Germany's traditional season curtain-raiser.
