Championship

The Championship is the second tier of English football, with a lineage stretching back to the Football League Second Division of 1892 and its current name adopted in 2004. Twenty-four clubs play a gruelling 46-match double round-robin, with the top two promoted automatically to the Premier League and a third promotion place decided through the play-offs, whose Wembley final is regularly billed as the richest single match in world football — promotion is estimated to be worth in excess of £200 million. The bottom three clubs are relegated to League One. Leicester City hold the record for second-tier titles, and the division is one of the best-attended and most competitive second tiers anywhere in the game, regularly featuring former Premier League clubs fighting to return to the top flight.
