Super Cup

The Supercopa de España is Spain's Super Cup, founded in 1982 to pit the La Liga champion against the Copa del Rey winner. Originally played over two legs and later as a single neutral-venue match, the competition was restructured for the 2019-20 season into a four-club Final Four — the league's champion and runner-up alongside the cup's winner and runner-up — playing semi-finals and a final each January. Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the competition between them, far ahead of any other club. The tournament was among the first major European Super Cups to move permanently abroad, first to a single match in Morocco and then to its current Saudi Arabian home, a relocation that has drawn criticism on human-rights grounds.
