FIFA Intercontinental Cup

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup is a revamped end-of-year competition that revives the name and lineage of the old European Cup versus Copa Libertadores showdown, now run directly by FIFA. Relaunched in its current format in late 2024, it brings together the champion clubs of all six confederations in a short knockout bracket: the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL champions meet first, with the winner advancing to face the winner of the AFC, CAF and OFC champions' bracket, before that side finally meets the UEFA Champions League winner — who enters at the final stage — for the overall title. Real Madrid won the inaugural edition of the relaunched competition, continuing a long tradition of European sides dominating intercontinental club fixtures whenever they have been played. The event gives clubs from outside Europe a rare high-profile shot at a global title in the years between editions of the four-yearly FIFA Club World Cup.
