The 1. Division is the second tier of Belarusian football, sitting directly below the Belarusian Premier League. Clubs meet home and away over the course of the season, with the strongest teams earning promotion to the top flight and the weakest sides finishing towards the bottom of the table. The division serves as the main pathway for provincial and reserve clubs hoping to reach the elite level of the domestic game, and it plays an important role in developing players before they move on to bigger clubs. As in the top flight, the season follows the spring-to-autumn calendar format typical of football across the region.
