Cup

The Croatian Football Cup has run since 1992, launched the same year as the league once the country's clubs left the Yugoslav football system. The modern competition draws in roughly 48 clubs, combining the leading sides from the HNL with winners of regional qualifying cups from across the country, and is played as a single-elimination knockout that culminates in a two-legged final. The winner earns a place in European qualification, sometimes handing a European route to a club that missed out through the league table alone. Dinamo Zagreb have won the competition more often than any other club, with fierce rivals Hajduk Split their closest challenger, meaning the “Eternal Derby” often carries extra weight when the two meet in the cup as well as the league.
