Coppa Italia

The Coppa Italia is Italy's premier domestic cup, first contested in 1922, lapsing more than once amid Italian football's early institutional splits before being properly re-established in 1935-36 and running continuously since 1958. Around 44 clubs from Serie A, Serie B and Serie C enter a single-elimination knockout, with the top eight Serie A sides receiving byes straight to the round of 16 and the final settled in one match at Rome's Stadio Olimpico. Juventus have won the competition more times than any other club, with Inter Milan and Roma the next-most successful sides. The winner earns entry to the following season's Europa League league phase as well as the Supercoppa Italiana, giving the competition real stakes even for mid-table clubs with little chance of European qualification through the league.
