Liga Leumit

Ligat Ha'al is the top division of Israeli football, established in its current form in 1999 when the league system was reorganised and a new premier division was placed above the existing top flight, which was renamed Liga Leumit. Clubs play a round-robin season before a split into upper and lower groups that determines the championship and relegation places. Maccabi Tel Aviv is the towering figure of Israeli football history, having won more league titles than any other club by a wide margin and never having been relegated from the top flight. The Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi and Hapoel, along with the parallel Haifa rivalry between Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Haifa, rank among the most passionately followed fixtures in Israeli sport.
