I Liga is the second tier of Polish football, positioned below the Ekstraklasa and above the II liga. Eighteen clubs contest a full home-and-away season of 34 matches. The top two teams are promoted automatically to the Ekstraklasa, while the third-placed side joins several clubs from further down the table in a play-off for the final promotion spot, with the bottom sides relegated in the opposite direction. I Liga regularly features clubs with recent top-flight experience and strong regional followings, making it a competitive, closely fought division. For ambitious clubs and their fans, it represents the direct pathway back to, or up into, the Polish top division.
