Taça de Portugal

The Taça de Portugal is the country's oldest and most prestigious domestic knockout competition, adopting its current name in 1938 while continuing the lineage of an earlier national championship that dated back to 1922. Well over 100 clubs enter each season, spanning roughly the top four tiers of Portuguese football plus regional qualifiers, with top-flight sides receiving a bye into a later round and the two-legged semi-finals the only exception to an otherwise single-match format; the final is traditionally staged at a fixed national venue in Oeiras. Benfica hold a clear record lead in Taça de Portugal titles, well ahead of Porto and Sporting. Unlike the League Cup, winning it guarantees European qualification, making it one of Portuguese football's most coveted prizes.
