Premyer Liqa

The Premyer Liqa is the top division of Azerbaijani football, running continuously since the country's independence in the early 1990s and reorganised under its current Premier League structure in 2007. Clubs play a home-and-away season to decide the championship. Qarabağ has been the dominant force of the modern era, an especially notable achievement given the club's history: displaced from its home city of Agdam during the conflict in the early 1990s, Qarabağ has played its home matches elsewhere in the country for decades while building one of the most recognisable stories in Azerbaijani sport. The club became the first from Azerbaijan to reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, in 2017, cementing its status as the country's flagship team in European competition.
