Taça da Liga

The Taça da Liga, known in English as the Portuguese League Cup, is a competition organised directly by the professional league and restricted to the top two divisions — Primeira Liga and Liga Portugal 2 — with no lower-tier or amateur entrants. Launched in 2007-08, it has changed format repeatedly, most recently running as knockout qualifying rounds followed by round-robin groups of three and a knockout finish, with a single final at a neutral venue. Benfica have won the competition more often than any other club, including an early run of four consecutive titles. Unlike the Taça de Portugal, winning the League Cup carries no European qualification, making it a purely domestic prize contested by the country's professional clubs.
