Cupa României

Cupa României is Romania's national football cup, played every year since the 1933-34 season aside from a wartime interruption in the 1940s. The competition is open to clubs from every level of Romanian football, with teams from Liga I entering alongside sides from the lower divisions and county-level football, giving the tournament a broader reach than the league championship. Because the draw is not seeded by division alone, smaller clubs occasionally string together cup runs that end with a tie against one of the country's traditional powers, adding a layer of unpredictability that the league rarely offers. The winner is rewarded with qualification for European competition, making the cup a realistic secondary route into continental football for clubs unlikely to challenge for the league title.
