The Segunda División is the second tier of Spanish football, founded in 1928-29 alongside the top flight. Twenty-two clubs play a 42-matchday season — one of the longest league campaigns in Europe — with the top two promoted automatically to La Liga and a third promotion spot decided by play-offs among the sides finishing third to sixth; the bottom four are relegated to the Primera Federación. Real Murcia hold the record for Segunda titles, and the division is notorious as a revolving door for major clubs: former European regulars such as Deportivo La Coruña, Real Zaragoza and Sporting Gijón have all spent extended spells at this level, making it unusually competitive and unpredictable for a second tier. Follow live scores, fixtures, results, standings and statistics for the competition, updated in real time.
