Vysshaya Liga

The Vysshaya Liga is the top division of Tajik football, established in 1992 as the country organised its own national championship following independence and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Clubs contest a single table across a home-and-away season to determine the champion. Istiklol Dushanbe has been the overwhelming force of the modern era, built on more stable financial and organisational footing than most domestic rivals, and the club strung together nine consecutive league titles between 2014 and 2022, a run of sustained dominance rarely matched anywhere in the region. Istiklol's professionalism and consistency have made it Tajikistan's flagship club in continental competition, regularly representing the country in the AFC's club tournaments and setting the standard that the rest of the league aims to reach.
