Primera División - Apertura

The Torneo Apertura is the opening half-season tournament of Uruguay's Primera División, kicking off the football calendar in the first half of the year. Clubs play each other in a round-robin format to decide the Apertura champion, who then goes on to face the winner of the closing Torneo Clausura in a championship decider later in the season. Uruguayan football has for generations been dominated by the fierce rivalry between Peñarol and Nacional, who between them have won the overwhelming majority of the country's league titles. The Apertura-Clausura structure keeps the season competitive from the very first matches, with meaningful stakes attached to results from the opening rounds.
