WSL Cup

The Women's League Cup is England's secondary domestic cup competition, contested by clubs from the country's top two women's divisions. First played in 2011 as the FA WSL Cup, it has carried various sponsor names since, including the Continental Cup, and is widely known simply as the League Cup. The competition opens with regional-style group stages, after which the top club from each group advances into a straight knockout bracket of quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final at a neutral venue. Clubs occupied with the UEFA Women's Champions League are often excused from the group phase, which in practice hands valuable minutes to fringe players, academy graduates and rotated squads early in the season, making the competition a useful staging post below the league and the FA Cup.
