The Superliga has been Denmark's top football division since 1991, when it replaced the old 1st Division as part of a push to professionalize the domestic game. Twelve clubs play a full home-and-away schedule before the league splits into championship and relegation groups for a final round of games, with the results carried forward and European qualification and relegation both decided in this closing phase. FC Copenhagen and Brøndby have been the two dominant clubs of the Superliga era, and their meetings are known as the “New Firm” derby, a nod to Scotland's Old Firm that captures a similar divide between a capital-city institution and a working-class suburban rival.
