The Eredivisie is the Netherlands' top football division, launched in 1956 when Dutch football turned professional, replacing an amateur championship that dated back to 1898. Eighteen clubs play a double round-robin of 34 matches, with the bottom two relegated and the last Eredivisie place decided by a promotion/relegation play-off; a separate mid-table play-off awards a Conference League berth.
