The Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira is Portugal's Super Cup, first contested unofficially in 1979 and formally organised under its current name from 1981 onward, named after Cândido de Oliveira, an early Portugal international, national team manager and co-founder of the sports newspaper A Bola. Played over two legs until 2000-01, it has since been a single match between the Primeira Liga champion and the Taça de Portugal winner at a neutral venue, traditionally opening the season in late summer. Porto have been dominant by a wide margin, having won more titles than Benfica and Sporting combined, making them comfortably the competition's most successful club.
